Experimental Incareration of Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations performed in the pediatric age group. Early elective hernia repair should be associated with reduced morbidity and mortality with the development of neonatal intensive care units. This
experimental study was designed to evaluate the Sprague-Dawley rats as the experimental animal model and to observe th subsequent histologic changes in small bowel and testes of rate subjected to unilateral incarcerated inguinal hernia. Three
groups
each containing 15 rate were established. In group 1 the left testes and small bowel were exposed and repaired. In group 2 a left-sided incarcerated inguinal hernia was created with bilateral orchiectomy and segmental resection of incarcerated
small
bowel 24 hours later. In group 3 a left-sided incarcerated inguinal hernia was created with reduction after 24 hours later.
The histology of incarcerated segment of small bowel was mild degree of interstitial edema and venous congestion in 10 cases of group 2 and one was strangulated. The testes of animals in group 1 and 3 were removed after 15 days. Left-sided
incarcerated
inguinal hernia has caused a lessened testicular/body wight ratio in the left testes in group 3, but not significant in statistics(p=0.07). The mean seminiferous tubular diameter(MSTD) and mean testicular biopsy score(MTBS) were determined for
ipsilateral and contralaterl testes in each of the 3 groups. A decreased MSTD and depressed MTBS were found in the left testes of group 3 animals.
In the incarcerated inguinal hernias, ipsilateral testes could be affected in histology, but a time interval should be required for changes to become manifest. While unilateral incarcerated inguinal hernias caused more pronounced histological
changes in
the ipsilateral testes, they could not affect the contralateral testes.
We observed the incarceration of inguinal hernia and histological changes after this procedure in Sprague-Dawley rats, so it could be used as the experimental animal model in the incarceration of inguinal hernia.
